Argentina reports July fiscal surplus amid rising debt refinancing
Argentina's national public sector recorded a financial surplus of $244,897 million in July, following a primary surplus of $2,960,333 million. This result was achieved despite significant debt interest payments totaling $2,715,436 million, primarily driven by coupons for Global and Bonares bonds. For the first seven months of the year, the accumulated primary surplus stands at approximately 0.9% of GDP, with a financial surplus of about 0.1% of GDP. Primary spending saw a real-term year-on-year decrease of 7% during July.
In the banking sector, Banco Provincia reported exceeding 100,000 debt refinancing operations in 2026 through its financial regularization program. The total amount refinanced has surpassed $390,000 million, representing a 382% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Notably, 96% of these refinanced debts belong to individuals, while 4% belong to companies, highlighting increased financial pressure on households.
Additionally, the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) has introduced measures to flexibilize dollar-denominated credit for companies. BCRA President Santiago Bausili stated that while the move aims to provide more financing options for sectors like SMEs and real estate, the bank does not expect a massive boom in such loans and remains committed to maintaining financial stability to avoid risks similar to the 2001 crisis.
