Flores earthquake death toll rises to 100 amid thousands of aftershocks

The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, has risen to 100 people, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). The increase follows the deaths of victims who were receiving treatment for severe injuries in hospitals.

As of August 25, 2026, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 7,029 aftershocks, with the largest reaching magnitude 6.2. At least 141 of these tremors have been felt by the public. The disaster has caused widespread destruction, including 73,818 damaged houses and 1,915 public facilities.

BNPB Head Suharyanto identified several challenges in relief efforts, including difficult hilly terrain, limited local logistics stocks, and inadequate road conditions for heavy transport vehicles. Currently, 1,603 people are reported injured, and 180,327 residents have been displaced to temporary shelters.
