Banedanmark identifies cause of speed limits on high-speed rail
Banedanmark has identified the cause of speed restrictions on the high-speed railway line between Ringsted, Køge Nord, and Copenhagen. Cracks and irregularities in the tracks have forced passenger trains to reduce their speed on parts of the route.
The infrastructure manager explained that the issue stems from a lack of freight train traffic. Heavy freight trains are necessary to smooth out irregularities in the rails; however, many freight locomotives lack the equipment required to operate under the new signaling system implemented in early 2023.
Banedanmark had assumed that freight operators would have rolled out the necessary technology by now. The organization expects the first compatible freight trains to begin operating on the section next year.
