Danish railway infrastructure modernization
Overview
Banedanmark has been implementing various infrastructure upgrades and technological transitions across the Danish rail network. On the Svendborg–Odense line, the agency transitioned to the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a digital signaling technology designed to replace analog systems and improve safety. Similarly, extensive renovations at Aarhus Central Station, involving track replacement and platform extensions, are nearing completion.
However, technical challenges have emerged on the high-speed line between Ringsted, Køge Nord, and Copenhagen. Speed restrictions were imposed due to cracks and irregularities in the tracks. Banedanmark identified the cause as a lack of heavy freight train traffic, which is necessary to smooth rail irregularities. This shortage is attributed to many freight locomotives lacking the equipment required to operate under the new signaling system implemented in early 2023. The agency expects compatible freight trains to begin operating on this section next year.
