Bangkok bar manager shaves woman's head over unpaid bill
A video showing a bar manager in Bangkok, Thailand, shaving a woman's head has sparked widespread controversy and legal scrutiny. The incident occurred on August 25 in the Pinklao district after an 18-year-old woman allegedly used a fake ID to enter a bar and ran up a 60,000 baht (approximately $1,800) tab before attempting to leave without paying.
Footage shows the woman being presented with an ultimatum: pay the bill, face police, or agree to a “hair purchase contract” where her hair would be shaved and allegedly donated. While the bar management claimed the act was an impulsive response to financial loss and that the woman consented to the arrangement, social activists have condemned the practice.
Chalida Phalamat, founder of the Be One Foundation, stated that while she understands the business's need to protect profits, the action was “clearly unlawful.” She noted that a contract signed under duress is void and that the act could constitute assault, coercion, or unlawful detention. The woman's mother has since filed a police report, and Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has been called upon to investigate the matter.
