Bangkok floods cause 40 deaths and trigger state of emergency
Severe flooding has struck Bangkok, Thailand, after approximately 300mm of rain fell within a two-day period. The intense rainfall has transformed neighborhoods into stagnant lakes, causing significant disruption and loss of life.
According to government reports, about 40 people have died in flood-related incidents, with deaths attributed to drowning and accidental electrocution. Authorities have declared a state of emergency as the city struggles to manage the deluge. Thousands of residents have sought refuge in more than 230 emergency shelters across the metropolitan area.
In areas such as the Khlong Chan flat compound, water levels rose rapidly, submerging vehicles and ground-floor structures. Residents reported that the rainfall was constant and that mobile phone warnings arrived too late to prevent street-level flooding from reaching waist-high levels.
