Bangkok authorities activate flood management plans amid heavy rain
Bangkok authorities have activated comprehensive flood management plans in response to heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that the city is closely monitoring high-risk areas, including Senanikom and the Lat Phrao canal zones, to manage both local rainwater and northern runoff.
The Department of Drainage is managing 1,980 canals and 38 water retention areas to mitigate flooding. Officials are also addressing drainage efficiency by ensuring debris does not obstruct water inlets. To manage northern water flow, the city is coordinating with the Royal Irrigation Department, as water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam is expected to increase, potentially raising river levels by 0.60 to 1.50 meters in low-lying areas.
Recent heavy rains have caused localized flooding on several major roads. Min Buri recorded the highest rainfall at 101.5 mm. While drainage efforts have cleared 10 major locations, including Ladprao and Srinakarin, four areas in Min Buri and Lat Krabang—specifically Suwinthawong, Luang Phaeng, Chao Khun Thahan, and Lat Krabang roads—continue to experience standing water ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters deep.
