Bangladesh Commerce Minister demands explanation for malta price surge

The Commerce Minister has demanded an explanation from traders regarding the sudden price surge of malta, which has reached 520 BDT per kilogram in some markets. The Minister has instructed the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection to take action if evidence of irrational pricing is found.

Traders attribute the shortage to a decline in imports, noting that weekly arrivals have dropped to between 12 and 29 containers, whereas the daily requirement is approximately 15 containers. Factors contributing to reduced imports include high tariffs, transportation costs, port complexities, and financial losses from previous shipments. The Minister has assured a review of malta tariffs and urged increasing supply through alternative sources and faster letter of credit openings.

Additionally, the government is preparing for the upcoming high demand for dates. The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission will meet with importers to establish a logical indicator price based on international market values to resolve long-standing assessment value issues.
