Bangladesh malta price surge and import issues

Overview

The Bangladesh Commerce Minister has demanded an explanation from traders regarding a sudden price surge for malta, which has reached 520 BDT per kilogram in certain markets. The Minister instructed the Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection to take action if evidence of irrational pricing is discovered.

Traders have attributed the shortage to declining imports, noting that weekly arrivals have dropped to between 12 and 29 containers, while the daily requirement is approximately 15 containers. Contributing factors to the reduced supply include high tariffs, transportation costs, port complexities, and financial losses from previous shipments. In response, the Minister has promised a review of malta tariffs and urged the use of alternative sources and faster letter of credit openings to increase supply.
