Bangladesh dengue deaths reach 209 this year amid rising September fatalities
Bangladesh is experiencing a significant surge in dengue fever cases and fatalities. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, 112 people have died from the mosquito-borne disease in September alone, including eight deaths reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total death toll for the year to 209.
Hospital admissions remain high, with 1,782 new patients admitted in a single 24-hour period. Regional data shows that while Dhaka continues to see high numbers, the Chattogram division recorded 288 new admissions, followed closely by Khulna with 286. Since January 1, a total of 69,149 people have been hospitalized nationwide due to dengue.
In response to the evolving nature of the disease, the Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr. Shahadat Hossain, has called for increased scientific research. Speaking at a seminar, he emphasized that dengue should not be treated merely as a seasonal illness, noting that factors such as climate change, urbanization, and shifting virus serotypes are altering the disease's patterns. He urged authorities to move beyond temporary mosquito control measures and focus on data-driven prevention and long-term management.
