Bangladesh dengue outbreak accelerates, straining hospitals
Bangladesh is experiencing an accelerating dengue fever outbreak, with 42,590 hospitalizations and 117 deaths recorded so far this year. A sharp surge in cases during September has placed immense strain on the national healthcare system, which is also currently managing a nationwide measles epidemic that has resulted in nearly 1,000 child deaths this year.
In a single 24-hour period, health ministry data reported 1,558 new hospitalizations and at least four deaths, marking the highest daily admission rate of the year. Medical entomologist Professor Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University warns that the epidemic peak has not yet been reached. Based on current trends and weather conditions, hospitalizations in September could exceed 30,000, potentially making it the most severe month of the year for the disease.
Regional reports indicate localized crises, such as in the Pirojpur district of the Barishal division, where 1,965 patients have been admitted this year, leading to acute shortages of hospital beds and forcing some patients to be treated on floors.
