Bangladesh dengue outbreak intensifies after deadliest month

Bangladesh is facing a severe dengue outbreak, with September recorded as the deadliest month of the year. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), September saw 43,774 hospitalizations and 148 deaths, accounting for approximately 60 percent of the country's total fatalities this year.

Medical experts, including entomologist Kabirul Bashar from Jahangirnagar University, warn that the situation could worsen throughout October. This risk is driven by recent rainfall and a 45 to 60-day lag between precipitation and increased mosquito transmission. The spread of the Aedes mosquito is now being reported as a nationwide challenge, moving beyond major cities.

The dengue surge is placing immense pressure on a healthcare system already struggling with a significant measles outbreak, which has claimed the lives of over 1,100 children in the country this year. Total dengue-related deaths since January have reached at least 245, with 79,620 hospital admissions recorded to date.
