Bangladesh garment wage board agrees to increase minimum pay
The Bangladesh garment wage board has reached an agreement to implement a new minimum wage structure for the readymade garment (RMG) sector. Representatives for both factory owners and workers reached a consensus to begin the new structure on December 1, with revised salaries to be paid in January.
While the specific amount of the increase has not yet been determined, workers have been demanding a monthly minimum wage of 30,000 taka, up from the current 12,500 taka. The decision follows five days of intense protests and clashes in industrial areas such as Fatullah, Narayanganj. During these demonstrations, workers reportedly threw bricks and set fires to block roads, leading police to respond with tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowds.
The RMG industry is a critical economic pillar for Bangladesh, which is the world's second-largest garment exporter. The dispute highlights long-standing tensions regarding pay and working conditions in a sector that employs over four million people. Factory owners have expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of high wage demands due to rising raw material costs and decreasing orders.
