Bangladesh garment worker wage protests

Overview

Garment workers in Bangladesh have entered a period of negotiation following intense protests demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 BDT, more than double the existing rate of approximately 12,500 to 13,000 BDT. The demonstrations, centered in industrial hubs including Dhaka, Gazipur, Ashulia, Mirpur, and Narayanganj, have caused significant disruptions to major transportation routes. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement have intensified, with workers reportedly throwing bricks and stones, while police have utilized tear gas, water cannons, and sound grenades to disperse crowds. These unrests resulted in significant casualties, including at least 58 injured police officers.

The economic impact on the textile sector remains severe. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) reports that between 529 and 670 factories have closed or partially suspended production, potentially affecting nearly one million workers. This sector is critical to the national economy, accounting for over 80 percent of Bangladesh's export earnings.

In a recent development, the garment wage board has reached an agreement to implement a new minimum wage structure for the readymade garment (RMG) sector. Representatives for both factory owners and workers reached a consensus to begin the new structure on December 1, with revised salaries to be paid in January. While the specific amount of the increase has not yet been determined, the decision follows several days of intense protests and clashes in industrial areas such as Fatullah and Narayanganj. Factory owners have expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of high wage demands due to rising raw material costs and decreasing orders.
