Bangladesh garment workers protest for higher minimum wage

Garment workers in Bangladesh have entered a fourth day of protests demanding a minimum monthly wage increase from approximately 12,500 taka to 30,000 taka. The demonstrations, driven by rising living costs and high inflation, have led to violent clashes between workers and law enforcement in industrial hubs including Ashulia, Gazipur, Mirpur, and Narayanganj.

Reports indicate that hundreds of factories, with some estimates citing up to 670 or 700 closures, have suspended operations. These disruptions threaten a sector that employs roughly four million people and accounts for over 80 percent of the nation's export earnings, totaling approximately $39 billion in the last financial year. The industry is a critical supplier for global brands such as H&M, Zara, Walmart, and Primark.

Police have utilized tear gas, sound grenades, and water cannons to disperse crowds, while protesters have reportedly thrown bricks and stones and set fire to vehicles. At least 58 police officers have been injured during the unrest. Although the government announced the formation of a new wage board to review salary structures, workers have continued to strike, stating the measure has not sufficiently addressed their economic needs.
