Bangladesh garment workers protest for wage hike
Garment workers in Bangladesh have entered their third day of protests, demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 BDT, more than double the current rate of 12,500 BDT. The unrest has caused significant disruptions in major industrial hubs, including Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar, and Ashulia.
Clashes between workers and law enforcement have been reported in Mirpur, Ashulia, and Gazipur. Police have utilized tear gas, sound grenades, and water cannons to disperse crowds attempting to block major highways, such as the Dhaka-Tangail and Nabinagar-Chandra routes. In some instances, protesters set fire to police boxes and vehicles.
In response to the escalating unrest, the government has formed a new six-member wage board to review the minimum wage. The board includes representatives from the government, factory owners, and workers. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed authorities to ensure the continuation of factory operations while protecting lives and property. Meanwhile, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed held meetings with factory owners to address the situation, noting allegations that external actors may be instigating the violence to destabilize the industry.
