Bangladesh Health Minister vows to eliminate brokers in public hospitals

Bangladesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhaowat Hossain has announced a government initiative to eliminate brokers from all public hospitals. During a visit to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and other facilities in Sylhet, the Minister stated that law enforcement agencies, including the DGFI and RAB, are working together to arrest individuals who deceive patients into using private clinics.

The Minister also addressed the recent rise in measles infections, attributing the outbreak to gaps in vaccination coverage following a long hiatus in regular campaigns after December 2020. To combat this, the government is conducting mop-up campaigns and plans to launch a large-scale vaccination program later this month, with a specific focus on geographically remote areas.

Regarding hospital management, the Minister directed officials to resolve drainage and cleanliness issues at Sylhet hospitals within seven days. He noted that recent inspections of over 25 hospitals showed satisfactory doctor attendance and improvements in food quality and patient care. Additionally, mobile courts are being used at the district level to fine or seal illegal clinics and unauthorized medical practitioners.
