Bangladesh Home Minister Rules Out Arrest of Former President Shahabuddin

Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said there is no legal basis to detain former President Mohammad Shahabuddin, who resigned on July 24, citing health reasons. The minister emphasized that Shahabuddin will continue to receive all protections and security under the law, including six months of guard from the Special Security Force and the Presidential Guard Regiment.

Ahmed added that while demonstrations calling for the former president’s arrest are ongoing, no factual evidence or official statement has been presented that would justify any legal action. He noted that any future allegations would be dealt with according to due process, and reiterated the right of citizens to protest peacefully.
