Bangladesh Human Rights Report Documents 74 Deaths in April‑June 2026 Violence

A human‑rights organisation, Adhikar, released a quarterly report covering April to June 2026 in Bangladesh. It recorded a total of 74 deaths – 33 in mob attacks and 41 in political clashes – and about 970 injuries. The report attributes most mob killings to suspected theft, robbery or alleged affronts to religious sentiments, and notes that many incidents involve informal village panchayat‑style punishments.

Internal fighting within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) accounted for 57 recorded confrontations, resulting in four deaths and roughly 400 injuries, while the National Citizen Party (NCP) saw two clashes with 16 injuries. The organisation highlighted forced extortion, land grabs, abductions, sexual assault and attacks on schools, courts and police as recurring crimes. It documented 255 rape victims (93 women, 161 girls) and warned of inadequate forensic and medical support.

The report also underscored severe prison overcrowding, with 75 facilities housing over 85,000 inmates against a capacity of 43,157, leading to 16 inmate deaths from disease. Three extrajudicial killings were cited. Adhikar called for an independent investigation, accountability and stronger rule of law.
