Bangladesh minority violence escalation

In July 2026, two Bangladeshi human‑rights groups released reports documenting a sharp rise in violence against religious, ethnic and indigenous minorities. The Hindu‑Buddhist Christian Unity Council recorded 257 incidents from January to June, including 44 deaths, kidnappings, assaults on places of worship and land seizures, and called for a Minority Protection Act. The Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities reported 824 alleged violations across 63 districts, citing murders, sexual violence, arson and attacks on temples, especially targeting Chakma, Tripura and other indigenous communities.

A separate quarterly report by Adhikar covering April‑June 2026 noted 74 deaths – 33 from mob attacks and 41 from political clashes – and about 970 injuries. The report linked many killings to alleged religious affronts and highlighted forced extortion, land grabs, abductions, sexual assault and attacks on schools, courts and police. It also warned of severe prison overcrowding and called for independent investigations and stronger rule of law.

Both reports underscore a pattern of widespread communal and political violence, extensive human‑rights abuses, and urgent demands for legal safeguards and independent inquiries.
