Bangladesh transport fares rise following fuel price hike

Following a significant increase in fuel prices, the Bangladesh government has implemented new fare structures for various modes of public transport. Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Sheikh Rabiul Alam Rabi, announced that passenger launch fares have been adjusted, increasing by 23 paisa per kilometer for the first 100 kilometers and 20 paisa per kilometer thereafter.

Diesel-powered bus and minibus fares have also risen by 17 paisa per kilometer across metropolitan, inter-district, and long-distance routes. In Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas, the minimum bus fare is set at 10 taka, while minibuses are set at 8 taka. Despite these official adjustments, passengers have reported instances of bus workers charging an additional 5 to 10 taka above the regulated rates, leading to disputes on several routes.

While transport costs for buses and launches have been formalized, officials stated that efforts are being made to maintain existing fare levels for rail and ferry services to mitigate the impact on the public. The fuel price hike, which saw diesel, petrol, and octane prices rise by 20 taka per liter, has placed increased financial pressure on commuters and transport operators alike.
