Bangladesh fuel price impact on transport and logistics

Overview

Following a significant rise in fuel prices, including a 17.4% increase in diesel costs, various sectors in Bangladesh have implemented price adjustments.

In the logistics sector, the Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) announced a 9.85% increase in service charges for private Inland Container Depots (ICDs). This surcharge, effective September 21, covers services such as container transportation between Chattogram Port and private depots, handling of empty containers, and the stuffing or unloading of goods. BICDA Secretary General Md Ruhul Amin Sikder stated the adjustment was required to offset rising fuel-related operating costs.

Simultaneously, the government has implemented new fare structures for public transport. Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Sheikh Rabiul Alam Rabi, announced that passenger launch fares have been adjusted, increasing by 23 paisa per kilometer for the first 100 kilometers and 20 paisa per kilometer thereafter. Diesel-powered bus and minibus fares rose by 17 paisa per kilometer across metropolitan, inter-district, and long-distance routes. In Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas, the minimum bus fare is set at 10 taka, while minibuses are set at 8 taka.

While officials stated efforts are being made to maintain existing fare levels for rail and ferry services to mitigate public impact, commuters face ongoing challenges. Passengers have reported instances of workers charging an additional 5 to 10 taka above regulated rates, leading to disputes on several routes. The fuel price hike, which saw diesel, petrol, and octane prices rise by 20 taka per liter, continues to place financial pressure on both commuters and transport operators.
