Bangladesh raises fuel prices by 20 taka per liter

The Bangladesh government has increased the prices of diesel, kerosene, petrol, and octane by 20 taka per liter, effective September 21, 2026. Under the new rates, diesel is priced at 135 taka, kerosene at 155 taka, petrol at 160 taka, and octane at 165 taka per liter.

The decision follows significant rising costs in the international market and increased freight charges due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources noted that international fuel prices have more than doubled since March 2026. This adjustment aims to mitigate the substantial losses incurred by the state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), which reported a loss of approximately 22,875.66 crore taka between March and August due to unadjusted pricing. The hike is also intended to conserve foreign exchange reserves and reduce the risk of fuel smuggling to neighboring countries.

The price increase has immediate implications for the economy, with transport owners, goods transport associations, and the garment export sector expressing concerns over rising operational costs. Reports indicate that long-distance bus fares and goods transport costs have already begun to rise in response to the fuel hike, raising fears of increased inflation and higher living costs for the general public.
