Overview

Bangladesh is experiencing rising costs for essential commodities and energy. In mid-September, retail markets reported shortages of bottled soybean oil and significant price increases for staples like flour and atta, driven by higher wholesale costs.

Following these market fluctuations, the government announced a substantial increase in fuel prices effective September 21, 2026. Retail rates for diesel, kerosene, petrol, and octane were raised by 20 BDT per liter. Under the new rates, diesel will cost 135 taka, kerosene 155 taka, petrol 160 taka, and octane 165 taka per liter.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources attributed this adjustment to rising international fuel prices and increased freight charges stemming from conflicts in the Middle East. State Minister Anindya Islam Amit noted that while global fuel prices have more than doubled, the government had previously avoided full adjustments to protect the public.

The hike aims to mitigate significant financial losses faced by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), which reportedly suffered a loss of approximately 22,875.66 crore taka between March and August. Officials stated the adjustment is necessary to reduce annual losses, which could reach 40,000 crore taka for diesel alone, while also helping to save foreign currency and reduce the risk of fuel smuggling.

The price increase has triggered immediate economic responses. In Chittagong, the Bangladesh Inland Container Depot Association (BICDA) has imposed a 9.85 percent fuel surcharge on container services to offset rising diesel costs. Additionally, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is convening meetings to discuss potential adjustments to bus fares to account for increased operational expenses. Transport owners, goods transport associations, and the garment export sector have expressed concerns over rising operational costs, with reports indicating that long-distance bus fares and goods transport costs have already begun to rise, fueling fears of increased inflation.
