Bangladesh markets face edible oil shortage and rising flour prices
Retail markets in Bangladesh are experiencing a shortage of bottled soybean oil, particularly in half-liter and one-liter sizes. Despite a price increase of 5 Taka per liter, bringing the cost to 204 Taka, consumers are struggling to find sufficient supply.
In addition to the oil crisis, prices for essential staples such as flour and atta have risen significantly. Retailers report that loose flour prices have increased by approximately 5 Taka per kilogram, while flour prices have climbed by up to 10 Taka per kilogram over the past month. These increases are driven by higher wholesale and dealer-level costs.
While vegetable prices have fluctuated due to reduced supply caused by rainfall, the prices of eggs and certain types of poultry have seen a slight decrease. Fish prices remain relatively stable. Concerns have been raised regarding whether artificial crises are being created in the edible oil market and whether refineries are releasing sufficient quantities to meet demand.
