Bangladesh: Protests erupt against Tarique Rahman government
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has launched a series of protests in Dhaka against the government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Demonstrators have cited rising inflation, fuel shortages, and a power crisis as primary grievances. During a rally outside the National Museum, protesters chanted anti-India slogans, with NCP convenor Nahid Islam alleging that New Delhi is interfering in internal affairs and calling for a renegotiation of the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty.
The NCP has issued a five-point charter of demands, which includes the resignation of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood. The party also demands the dissolution of a constitutional amendment committee, the formation of a constitutional reform council, and the removal of the Inspector General of Police.
While the NCP is participating in an 11-party alliance long march toward Khulna, party officials noted that their involvement in the current convoy is symbolic, with only a few representatives attending rather than top leadership. Meanwhile, BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi defended the Prime Minister, stating that the administration is focused on economic revitalization, job creation, and attracting foreign investment through international visits to countries like China and Japan.
