Political unrest in Bangladesh

Overview

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accused the ousted Awami League and the opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of conspiring to destabilize the country through orchestrated labour unrest. Rahman cited intelligence reports claiming that the fugitive former leader is providing funds from across the border to stir up instability in industrial establishments.

Following these allegations, the National Citizen Party (NCP) launched protests in Dhaka against the Rahman government. Demonstrators cited rising inflation, fuel shortages, and a power crisis as primary grievances. During a rally, NCP convenor Nahid Islam alleged that India is interfering in internal affairs. The NCP issued a five-point charter of demands, including the resignation of the Home Minister and Energy Minister, the dissolution of a constitutional amendment committee, and the removal of the Inspector General of Police.
