Bangladesh dengue deaths surge in September

Dengue fever cases and fatalities are rising sharply in Bangladesh, with September recording the highest monthly death toll of the year. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the country has seen 190 deaths due to the mosquito-borne virus so far in 2026.

In September alone, death counts reached between 87 and 93, a significant increase compared to previous months such as August (43 deaths) and July (36 deaths). Hospital admissions have also surged; daily admissions in September averaged over 1,000 patients, nearly doubling the daily average seen in August.

The disease has now spread across all 64 districts of the country. Health officials note that the rainy season and standing water have created ideal breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes. Total hospitalizations since January 1 have reached approximately 63,627.
