Bangladesh Schedules Presidential Election for August 20 Amid Political Turmoil
Bangladesh's Election Commission announced that a presidential election will be held on August 20, with voting from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Jatiya Sangsad session hall. Nomination papers must be submitted by August 13, scrutiny begins on August 16 and candidates may withdraw until August 18. The election follows the July 24 resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who cited health issues after the July‑August 2024 student‑led protests that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India.
Experts say the country’s democratic progress remains stalled. Analysts highlighted a weakening of opposition parties, a decline in women’s political participation and the failure of promised reforms since the protests. They called for economic reforms and broader inclusion to revive electoral democracy in Bangladesh.
