Bangladesh presidential election process

Following the July 24 resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who cited health issues, Bangladesh has scheduled a presidential election for August 20. This election is expected to be the first contested ballot for the nation’s highest constitutional office in over 35 years, as the position has typically been filled unopposed since 1991.

The Election Commission has established a timeline where nomination papers must be submitted by August 13, with scrutiny beginning on August 16. Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is currently serving as acting president.

Political participation is expected from both the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance. While the BNP holds a significant parliamentary majority following the 2026 elections, analysts suggest opposition participation is a strategic move to ensure a presence in the democratic process. Some experts note that despite the upcoming vote, democratic progress remains stalled due to the weakening of opposition parties and a lack of promised reforms following the 2024 student-led protests.
