Bangladesh to hold first contested presidential election in 35 years

Bangladesh is scheduled to hold a presidential election on August 20, marking the first contested ballot for the country’s highest constitutional office in over 35 years. Since 1991, the position has typically been filled by candidates elected unopposed.

The election follows the July 24 resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is currently serving as acting president. Per the Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of a vacancy.

Both the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance are expected to field candidates. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is a likely nominee for the ruling party. While the BNP holds a significant parliamentary majority following the 2026 elections, legal experts suggest the opposition's participation serves as a strategic political move to ensure presence in the democratic process.
