Bangladesh woman dies following alleged dowry abuse

Jumratun Nesa Borsha, a 24-year-old woman, died in Dhaka following allegations of relentless physical abuse and dowry demands by her husband, Nabid Hossain. Borsha and Hossain had entered into an informal marriage ceremony on 7 October 2025, with formal wedding celebrations planned for late 2025 or early 2026.

According to her family, Borsha made a final video call to her father, Sheikh Monowar Hossain, pleading for help during a period of severe torture. Although Hossain’s family claimed Borsha committed suicide, her parents arrived at the residence shortly after the call to find her deceased. Her mother, Hasina Akter, rejected the suicide claim, noting that Borsha had previously suffered a fractured head due to domestic violence.

Following the incident, Borsha’s father filed a murder case with the Tejgaon Police Station. Police Officer-in-Charge Muniruzzaman stated that marks of injuries were found on her body and noted a history of abuse related to dowry demands. Hossain was taken into police custody following the report.
