Dowry related deaths in Bangladesh

Overview

Recent reports from Bangladesh highlight separate incidents involving the deaths of women amid allegations of dowry related abuse and domestic violence.

In Narayanganj, Farzana Islam, a postgraduate pharmacy student at Cumilla University, was found dead in a rented residence. While police investigations initially suggested suicide stemming from family disputes, the victim’s family alleged premeditated murder driven by dowry demands. The husband, Nazmul Islam, was detained for questioning.

In Dhaka, 24 year old Jumratun Nesa Borsha died following allegations of relentless physical abuse and dowry demands by her husband, Nabid Hossain. Although the husband’s family claimed suicide, Borsha’s parents reported seeing marks of injury on her body and noted a history of domestic violence. A murder case has been filed with the Tejgaon Police Station, and Hossain is in police custody.
