Bangsamoro region holds historic first parliamentary elections
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the southern Philippines held its first-ever parliamentary elections on September 14, 2026. This historic vote marks a critical step in the region's transition toward self-governance following a 2014 peace agreement that aimed to end decades of insurgency.
Approximately 2.39 million registered voters are participating to elect an 80-seat parliament. The legislative body will consist of 40 regional political party representatives, 32 district representatives, and eight sectoral representatives. The region's chief minister will be elected by the parliament during its inaugural session.
While the election is a milestone for the peace process, security concerns have emerged. A shooting in Cotabato City the day before the polls left three people dead and 15 injured. Additionally, election officials in Maluso, Basilan, discovered pre-shaded ballots in 36 out of 68 precincts, prompting an immediate order to reprint ballots. To ensure order, more than 20,000 security personnel, including soldiers and police, were deployed across the region. International observers from various diplomatic delegations and organizations are also monitoring the proceedings to ensure a democratic transition.
