Indonesia stock market recovers amid MSCI reclassification concerns
The Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) has shown signs of recovery, posting several days of gains and closing near 5,439 on October 23, 2026. This rebound follows a significant market sell-off triggered by MSCI’s announcement regarding a potential reclassification of Indonesia from an emerging market to a standalone market.
To address investor concerns and mitigate the risk of capital outflows, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) is implementing reforms, including the exclusion of High Shareholding Concentration (HSC) stocks from the index calculation starting November 2, 2026. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) is also accelerating capital market reforms to enhance transparency and global investor trust.
In response to market volatility, the sovereign wealth fund Danantara has begun purchasing shares in attractive domestic companies, particularly state-owned enterprises, to stabilize the market. Danantara has also outlined strategic investment priorities for 2027, focusing on digital infrastructure, critical minerals, and downstreaming. Additionally, the fund plans to develop 12 smart cities by leveraging state-owned enterprise assets.
