Indonesia market outlook, reforms & policy moves
Overview
S&P Global kept Indonesia’s sovereign rating at BBB with a stable outlook, noting that fiscal pressures from high energy prices, a weak rupiah and rising debt are temporary. Foreign debt (ULN) stood at US$444.4 billion in May, a debt‑to‑GDP ratio close to 40 %, well under the Maastricht ceiling. The Jakarta Composite opened higher, driven by energy, consumer non‑cyclical, finance and property stocks. The Indonesia Stock Exchange revised its High Shareholding Concentration rules, adding a price‑impact‑ratio test and expanding the watch list to 51 stocks removed from major indexes. OJK accelerated plans for a mineral and strategic commodities exchange slated for 1 January 2027 and asked the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to consider fiscal incentives for non‑delivery gold‑ETF products. President Prabowo Subianto continued the nationwide “Panen Raya” harvest programme, overseeing TNI‑Polri teams harvesting sugarcane, soybeans and rice at 43 sites on 17 July. He highlighted food‑security as a collective national mission and pointed to a 100 kL‑per‑day bio‑ethanol pilot that supports renewable‑energy goals alongside the Masela LNG project. Prabowo also signalled that, if needed, defence and police budgets could be trimmed to fund poverty‑eradication programmes. Equities remain down about 35 % YTD, leaving valuations cheap; the Ministry of Finance promotes the retail bond series ORI030 as a low‑risk entry as yields sit above 7 %, a point reinforced by UOB executives who see the bonds as suitable for beginners. In the week of 13‑17 July 2026 the IHSG rallied 4.24 % to 6,175.54, out‑performing all ASEAN peers, lifting market capitalisation by roughly 4 % and trading volume by 28 %. Analysts attribute the bounce to solid domestic fundamentals despite global volatility.
