Bank of Ghana announces new banknote series and currency misuse crackdown

The Bank of Ghana has announced the upcoming launch of the Heritage Series of banknotes, scheduled for November 3, 2026, in Accra. The central bank clarified that this series is an upgrade of existing denominations—ranging from GH¢1 to GH¢200—and does not constitute a redenomination of the cedi. The redesigned notes will feature enhanced security, improved durability, and updated designs reflecting Ghana’s national identity. The bank confirmed that the notes will continue to use a reinforced cotton substrate rather than transitioning to polymer, and existing banknotes will remain legal tender alongside the new series.

In a separate enforcement action, the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Police Service arrested seven individuals in Accra for allegedly using cedi banknotes to create commercial money bouquets and cakes. The central bank warned that using currency for decorative purposes at weddings, birthdays, or graduations is a misuse of legal tender. Authorities stated that individuals found facilitating such activities may face legal consequences, including fines or imprisonment, to protect the integrity and physical condition of the national currency.
