Bank of Ghana Heritage Series banknote rollout

Overview

The Bank of Ghana announced the upcoming launch of the Heritage Series, an upgraded collection of cedi banknotes scheduled for November 3, 2026. According to Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the initiative is designed to modernize the national currency by improving durability, enhancing security features, and incorporating designs that reflect Ghana’s cultural heritage.

Following the initial announcement, central bank officials clarified that the rollout is an upgrade of existing denominations—ranging from GH₵1 to GH₵200—rather than the introduction of new ones or a redenomination of the cedi. Specifically, the bank addressed social media rumors by confirming that no new GH₵500 note will be issued; instead, the series will consist of existing denominations, including the reintroduction of the GH₵2 note. The redesigned notes will utilize a reinforced cotton substrate rather than transitioning to polymer.

The new banknotes will co-circulate with current notes, which will remain legal tender indefinitely. The Bank of Ghana has advised the public that there is no immediate deadline to exchange old currency and plans to launch public education campaigns to assist citizens in authenticating the new security features.

In a related enforcement action, the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Police Service arrested seven individuals in Accra for allegedly using cedi banknotes to create commercial money bouquets and cakes. The central bank warned that using currency for decorative purposes at weddings, birthdays, or graduations constitutes a misuse of legal tender, noting that those facilitating such activities may face fines or imprisonment to protect the integrity of the national currency.
