Bank of Ghana clarifies Heritage Series banknote details
The Bank of Ghana has clarified that the upcoming Heritage Series banknotes, scheduled for introduction in November, will not include a new GH₵500 denomination. Dominic Owusu, Director of the Currency Management Department, addressed social media rumors by confirming that the new series will only consist of existing denominations: GH₵1, GH₵2, GH₵5, GH₵10, GH₵20, GH₵50, GH₵100, and GH₵200.
The upgrade focuses on enhancing the security, durability, and anti-counterfeiting features of the currency while incorporating designs that reflect Ghana’s history and culture.
There is no deadline for citizens to exchange their current cash. The Bank of Ghana stated that existing cedi notes will remain legal tender and will co-circulate with the new Heritage Series indefinitely until further notice. The central bank also plans to launch a public education campaign to help citizens identify and authenticate the redesigned notes.
