Bank of Ghana postpones launch of Heritage Series banknotes
The Bank of Ghana has rescheduled the unveiling of its upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, to November 12, 2026. The launch was originally intended for November 2, 2026.
The new series will include the eight existing denominations: GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100, and GH¢200. These notes are designed to incorporate modern security features to combat counterfeiting and utilize reinforced cotton to improve durability. The designs aim to celebrate Ghanaian heritage, culture, and national heroes.
Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama stated that the new notes will circulate alongside existing banknotes, which will remain legal tender. The public has been urged not to rush to exchange current notes. The upgrade is intended to modernize the currency to meet evolving security standards and improve the efficiency of currency management.
