Bank of Ghana currency management and modernization
Overview
The Bank of Ghana has taken steps to manage the integrity and modernization of the national currency. Initially, the central bank issued a warning against the unauthorized repair, taping, or gluing of torn and soiled Cedi banknotes. This advisory followed reports of individuals attempting to recirculate mutilated notes, an activity the bank stated could damage processing machines and undermine currency integrity. The bank directed that mutilated notes be presented to commercial banks for official replacement.
Following these management efforts, the Bank of Ghana announced the upcoming launch of the Heritage Series banknotes. Originally scheduled for early November 2026, the unveiling of these upgraded notes was postponed to November 12, 2026. The new series includes eight denominations and features reinforced cotton and modern security elements designed to combat counterfeiting. Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama confirmed that the new notes will circulate alongside existing banknotes, which will remain legal tender.
