Bank of Ghana to launch Heritage Series cedi banknotes in November 2026
The Bank of Ghana is set to launch the Heritage Series, an upgraded collection of cedi banknotes, on November 3, 2026. Announced by Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the initiative aims to modernize the national currency by enhancing security features, improving durability, and incorporating designs that reflect Ghana’s cultural heritage and national identity.
Central bank officials, including Dominic Owusu, Director of the Currency Management Department, clarified that the rollout is an upgrade of existing denominations rather than the introduction of new ones. The bank explicitly denied social media rumors regarding the issuance of a GH¢500 note, confirming that denominations will remain within the current range, including the reintroduction of the GH¢2 note.
The new Heritage Series will co-circulate with existing banknotes, which will remain legal tender. The Bank of Ghana advised the public against rushing to exchange old notes and urged all citizens, businesses, and financial institutions to handle the currency with care to reduce replacement costs. To assist with the transition, the bank plans to conduct extensive public education campaigns to help citizens authenticate the new security features.
