Banking desertification concerns rise in Italy's Macerata province

The establishment of a new regional committee to support credit and basic banking services is being viewed as a positive step toward addressing banking desertification in Italy. CNA Macerata noted that the reduction of bank branches is particularly impacting small municipalities and inland areas, where physical branches serve as vital points of reference for citizens and businesses.

Data from the Bank of Italy, processed by the CNA Marche Study Center, shows that in the province of Macerata, the number of bank branches fell from 125 on December 31, 2024, to 118 by December 31, 2025. This represents a 5.6% decrease in a single year, a rate higher than the 4.3% decline recorded across the broader Marche region.
