Borsa Istanbul loses $108.5 billion amid fund crisis

Türkiye is facing a significant financial crisis following a massive sell-off in Borsa Istanbul during September. The market capitalization of the exchange plunged by 23.3%, losing approximately ₺5.3 trillion ($108.5 billion) in value. This downturn was triggered by a wave of fund redemptions, leading the Capital Markets Board to order the liquidation of 131 funds belonging to seven portfolio management companies. The crisis has affected over 450,000 investors, with the total size of the affected funds exceeding $20 billion.

In the midst of this economic instability, political tensions have risen. AK Party Istanbul Deputy Serkan Bayram, who previously made sharp criticisms regarding the fund investigation and potential corruption, has issued an apology to party leadership and President Erdoğan, stating his remarks “exceeded his intention.” Bayram had previously warned of a potential “social explosion” and estimated the economic damage at $100 billion.

Alpaslan Çakar, President of the Banks Association of Türkiye (TBB), stated that the fund crisis is a limited issue and does not expect a negative impact on the broader banking sector, noting that capital remains within the system. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have called for greater accountability and investigations into the use of public authority during this period.
