Turkish BIST100 market outlook
Entities: BIST 100 index · Borsa İstanbul · Turkish banking sector · Borsa Istanbul · Bank of America
Overview
In early July 2024, broker Tacirler Yatırım lifted its 12‑month BIST 100 target to 19,800, citing expected rate easing and stronger earnings, while Fitch Ratings moved its medium‑term outlook for Turkish banks and insurers to “Deteriorating”. Throughout late July the index hovered around the low‑14 000s, pressured by global risks—including U.S.–Iran tensions and AI‑policy uncertainty—and domestic concerns ahead of a Moody’s sovereign‑rating review. Targets from Gedik Yatırım (19,392) and Ata Yatırım (19,600) highlighted defence, petrochemicals and IT as relatively resilient, whereas banking, real‑estate and transport lagged. The index opened above 14 000 on 27 July but retreated to 13 931, and fell to 13 774 on 28 July as markets priced in the pending Fed rate decision (3.50‑3.75%). Bank stocks led the decline on 29‑30 July, pushing the index to 13,501 and then to 13,688, marking a 3‑month‑plus slide with mining and petroleum sectors under pressure. Two years later, on 30 July 2026 the BIST 100 slid about 1.5 % to roughly 13,293 after a prior >2 % drop triggered the market’s short‑sale uptick rule, which restricts short sales to higher‑price trades. The move was reinforced by the Fed’s unchanged 3.50‑3.75 % policy rate and ongoing Middle‑East geopolitical tensions. Banking shares fell sharply, while chemicals, petroleum and plastics posted modest gains. Total turnover reached 160‑173 billion TL, with Bank of America clients accounting for a net sale of 1.2 billion TL, the biggest block being 609 million TL of Yapı ve Kredi shares. On 31 July 2026 the market showed a modest rebound. BIST 30 futures for August opened up 0.73 % at 15,523 points, and the BIST 100 opened 0.13 % higher at 13,310.27, ending a week with a 4.67 % decline.
