Indonesia food prices rise as chili and rice supplies tighten

Essential food commodities in Indonesia, particularly chili and rice, are experiencing significant price increases due to supply shortages and seasonal shifts. In Banyumas, Central Java, bird's eye chili prices have risen as farmers undergo crop regeneration, leaving a temporary gap between old harvests and new plantings. Beef prices have also climbed due to limited livestock supplies following the Eid al-Adha period.

In Yogyakarta, rice prices for both medium and premium varieties have exceeded government-set maximum retail prices (HET). Authorities attribute this to planting season shifts affecting harvest schedules. To mitigate these costs, the Yogyakarta City Government is working with Perum Bulog to distribute stabilized food supply and pricing (SPHP) rice.

On a national level, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) and the Ministry of Agriculture are preparing to stabilize chili prices by mobilizing stocks from surplus regions to high-demand areas. This strategy utilizes the Food Distribution Facilitation (FDP) program to address price volatility, noting that national average prices for bird's eye chili have reached approximately Rp81,052 per kg, with extreme variations seen across different provinces.
