Indonesia fuel subsidy and food price updates
Overview
Indonesia’s fuel subsidy and food-price dynamics continued to shift through early September 2026. In the energy sector, Pertamina Patra Niaga implemented price increases for several non-subsidized products effective September 1. Pertamax Turbo (RON 98) rose to Rp19,600 per liter, Dexlite to Rp23,700, Pertamina Dex to Rp25,200, and Pertamax Green 95 to Rp19,150. Pertamax (RON 92) remained stable at Rp15,950. Private providers also raised rates for premium products.
These adjustments led to a 10–15 percent increase in Solar JBT demand between June and August 2026, as motorists shifted toward subsidized fuel. In response to potential misuse and queues, the South Sulawesi Provincial Government formed a task force to monitor distribution across 24 regencies, targeting issues like modified fuel tanks. Pertamina has since increased fuel allocations by 10–15 percent in high-demand areas to mitigate shortages.
Food security remains a concern as prices for key commodities fluctuate. In Bandung, chicken meat prices rose to between Rp42,000 and Rp44,000 per kg, prompting local authorities to investigate the supply chain. Red bird’s eye chili reached approximately Rp83,050 per kg. Rising chicken costs have also driven inflation in Berau and Bali, partly due to demand from the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program and seasonal activities.
To stabilize inflation, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) launched the ‘Gerakan Pangan Murah’ (Cheap Food Movement) across 31 provinces. Supported by Bank Indonesia through digital payments like QRIS, the initiative aims to ensure the availability of rice, chili, onions, meat, cooking oil, and sugar. High demand for SPHP rice and Minyakita oil has been noted in regions like Demak and Kediri.
