Bar Council of India Orders Six‑Week Physical Inspection of All Law Colleges

The Bar Council of India (BCI) issued a directive on 23 July 2026 requiring every university that offers legal education to carry out a comprehensive physical inspection of all its constituent and affiliated Centres of Legal Education within six weeks. The inspection must verify compliance with the Rules of Legal Education, 2008, covering infrastructure such as classrooms, libraries, moot courts, computer facilities and student amenities, as well as faculty qualifications and attendance records. The BCI also instructed universities to discontinue any weekend or evening law programmes that do not meet the prescribed standards. The move follows observations by the Supreme Court in K. R. Sudersan v. Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry concerning the quality of legal education.

Universities are to form inspection teams and rely on on‑site verification rather than affidavits or photographs, ensuring that legal education institutions meet the minimum academic and infrastructural criteria set by the BCI.
