Bar Council of India law college reforms

In late July 2026 the Bar Council of India (BCI) began a sweeping overhaul of legal education standards. On 23 July it ordered a six‑week physical inspection of every law college and affiliated centre, checking infrastructure, faculty qualifications and compliance with the 2008 Rules of Legal Education, and directed the discontinuation of non‑standard weekend or evening programmes.

A few days later the BCI tightened admissions further, issuing a circular that only colleges with valid approval for the 2026‑27 session could admit students and that no extensions or partial applications would be accepted. At the same time, the Kerala High Court stayed a BCI‑initiated interim authority for the state bar council, ruling that the inclusion of a former, non‑elected chairman violated the Advocates Act. The court’s decision highlighted judicial scrutiny of the BCI’s governance reforms while the council continued to enforce stricter compliance across law institutions.
