Barahona schools implement transparent backpacks for new school year

The Ministry of Education has officially launched the 2026-2027 school year in the Regional 01 Education district, headquartered in Barahona. As part of the opening ceremonies held at the Instituto Tecnológico Federico Henríquez y Carvajal, authorities introduced a new security measure requiring the use of transparent backpacks.

The Regional 01 district serves a total enrollment of 68,354 students across five educational districts: Pedernales, Enriquillo, Barahona, Cabral, and Vicente Noble. The opening event included participation from teachers, administrative staff, civil authorities, and members of both the National Police and the School Police.

Regional Education Director Wanda Farrell highlighted recent academic successes, noting that 95% of three-year-olds in Barahona have developed reading capabilities. Nelson Espinosa, Director of Educational District 01-03, confirmed that authorities are prepared for the new term and urged parents to remain committed to their children's education.
